Join us at this Story Café Special with GWL’s ALN Development Worker, Donna Moore!
For three years, Donna spent her annual holidays visiting far-flung Yup’ik villages in the Alaskan wilderness to teach creative writing in schools that sometimes only had ten pupils. Some of the villages could only be reached by plane (which Donna had the chance to fly, herself!) Hear about her adventures, see her holiday snaps, and listen to some traditional Yup’ik folk tales at this Story Café Special. We’ll also be reading some excerpts from Scottish poet Kathleen Jamie’s wonderful book of essays, Surfacing, about her own trip to the same region of Alaska.
The Yup’ik peoples live mostly in Southwestern Alaska and their name in Yup’ik means “real person”. Storytelling is very important to the Yup’ik culture and is full of myths and folklore about animals and nature.
This is one of our “take part” events this Autumn as there’s chance for discussion and sharing – but if you’d just like to join and listen, please do come along!
