Lal Batti Express (Red-Light Express) is a powerful performance by young girls from Kranti Girls group about their life and experiences of being raised in Kamathipura in Mumbai, Asia’s most infamous red-light area.
Kranti, which means Revolution in Hindi, empowers girls from Mumbai’s red-light areas to become agents of social change. The main purpose of the Kranti group is to proudly share their stories to change the mindsets of thousands of people about sex workers, their children, and red-light areas around the world. Their latest play, Lal Batti Express (Red-Light Express), is a compilation of their life stories and experiences. It is a journey of Krantikaris (Revolutionaries) through their past, present and future. These stories move and inspire.
In the past five years, Kranti’s girls have become the first girls from India’s red-light area to study abroad. They’ve received UN awards for their social justice work and delivered TEDx speeches around the world. Kranti’s informal school was also recently nominated for the Global Teacher Prize.
Join us at GWL as we hear their moving and inspirational stories.
At the end of the performance, you will be able to ask them questions about their experiences and plans for the future, and you can see a trailer for the performance here.
