Did you know that Wikipedia doesn’t accurately reflect women’s histories? Wikipedia is the 7th most visited website in the world but currently only 1 in 5 of Wikipedia’s biographies are about women.
Join us as we work as Knowledge Activists to help make Wikipedia better. In this fun, friendly, and informative workshop you’ll learn to add, edit and improve Wikipedia entries for Scottish Suffrage/ttes. From Wiki newbies to experienced editors, all are welcome.
This event will take place at GWL and also online.
In this workshop, we will create or improve Wikipedia articles on suffrage activists who campaigned across Scotland, focusing on adding references to sources from the GWL archive. From Wiki newbies to experienced editors, all are welcome both online or in person. Training and support will be provided.
Wikipedia is the 7th most visited website in the world, but lacks diversity in both its editors and its articles. This workshop aims to help redress Wikipedia’s gender bias, both in the content available, and in the editors writing for the site. Currently only 19.61% of Wikipedia’s biographies are about women.
Help us increase the quantity and quality of information about Scottish suffrage activists available on the open web. Protest and Suffragettes have developed an Educational Resource on Scotland’s Suffrage History and a Suffragette Trumps card game which is now being taught in over 100 schools. These Wikipedia entries will support young people across Scotland as they learn about the inspiring women who fought for the right for women to vote in the UK.
Protests and Suffragettes have created a playlist of short videos about Wiki and Knowledge Activism on their Youtube channel.
This hybrid workshop is hosted in partnership with GWL by Protests & Suffragettes, Women’s History Scotland, and Wikimedia UK. Part of Glasgow Herstory Workshops, funded by Big Lottery and Wikimedia UK.
