“Though I address myself only to silences in literature and the ways in which writing ceases to be, this dying and death of capacities encompasses more than literature.” Tillie Olsen, Silences
Since October last year, Hitherto Unknown have been searching for silenced or unheard voices in the GWL zine archives, NLS moving image archives, the Mitchell archives and special collections, on the internet, and at live events across Glasgow.
We learned how to find hidden archival material from Isobel Maclellan, a librarian at the Mitchell’s Archives and Special Collections. Helen Vincent, Head of Rare Books, Maps and Music Collections talked us through the largely unexplored collections available to all at the NLS in Edinburgh. We heard from specialist web archivists at our event at Platform in Easterhouse, and visited live literature events across Glasgow, looking to find new voices from the edges. Finally, Emily Munro headed up a session looking at home movies stored at the NLS’s moving image archives.
This event is open to all who would like to hear more about Hitherto Unknown researchers project.
At the session we will:
Look back over what the Hitherto Unknown team have done so far.
Announce the 1st new Hitherto Unknown reading (and watching) list.
Share some readings from the new list.
Think about what’s next for the project.
At this event we also celebrate the launch of the 1st Tillie Olsen Reading List collection, which after donations and efforts of the Hitherto Unknown project, will soon be able to be borrowed from GWL.
