Our GWL Origin Stories display explores key points in our grassroots beginnings through archival materials and oral history interviews with GWL’s founders and early instigators Adele Patrick, Kate Henderson and Sue John.
The Three Decades team host the exhibition launch by showing the short film of filmed interviews, accompanied by a talk, and an exhibition tour, documenting how the organisation came into being.
GWL’s precursor, ‘Women in Profile’ was established to counter a male-centric cultural narrative about Glasgow’s arts and cultural landscape in the year leading up to Glasgow’s European City of Culture status in 1990. Glasgow Women’s Library’s first archive and library space opened in Garnethill initially to preserve the work of ‘Women in Profile’ and a year of grassroots, women’s artistic contributions to the city. We look back on this time as a period of GWL’s history that has been previously undocumented.
The event is free and open to all. To attend, please book below and we will share an email invitation with you. If you would like to make a donation to Glasgow Women’s Library, you can do so here.
Glasgow Women’s Library is wheelchair accessible, with lifts to the first floor and the Mezzanine Floor. We have accessible toilets and all the bathrooms are individual closed stalls and are gender neutral. Our larger Events Space is fitted with an induction loop. A portable induction loop is also available.
Find more information on Accessibility at GWL or contact us and we will be very happy to offer assistance.
