A monumental movie for Black Cinema, The Color Purple is an epic tale spanning forty years in the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), an African-American woman living in the South who survives incredible abuse and bigotry. After Celie’s abusive father marries her off to the equally debasing “Mister” Albert Johnson (Danny Glover), things go from bad to worse, leaving Celie to find companionship anywhere she can. She perseveres, holding on to her dream of one day being reunited with her sister in Africa. Based on the novel by Alice Walker. The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Oscars.
Screenings take place throughout autummn at GWL and the Glasgow Film Theatre as part of the British Film Institute’s Black Star season, the UK’s biggest ever season of film and television dedicated to celebrating the range, versatility and power of black actors. Join us to celebrate black on screen talent through watching and discussing films with black female leads. We have selected films for a wide audience – feel good family films; films directed by black female filmmakers and some black cinema classics. We have also invited special guests enabling audiences to hear from emerging Scottish based black female filmmakers and musicians.
