Who Makes Museums? We Make Museums

Concentric circles of mismatched glass jars on a wooden floor. The jars have salt crystals near the rim and are connected with wires, and a light strip hangs at their centre.

Whose art ends up in museums? And whose doesn’t?

What artwork is in GWL’s Museum and what is missing?

The We Make Museums project will focus on two themes close to GWL’s heart: environmental justice and the fight for equality. A new group is forming of people interested to find out more about how museums work and how the art in them gets there. We will discover new things about art, artists and museums. Art and museums are connected to the real world so we will also explore the impact of our changing environment alongside experiences of health inequality, racism and other ways that museums and art can exclude people. The We Make Museums group will explore what artworks they would like to see in museums, including Glasgow Women’s Library.

The We Make Museums group of women* will:

  • Go behind the scenes of Glasgow Women’s Library Museum collection
  • Visit art museums across Scotland together
  • Work with artists to think about new works for the GWL collection

All travel and museum costs will be covered for participants, and there is funding to support other access needs.

If you would like to take part or find out more please get in touch with Caroline at caroline.gausden@womenslibrary.org.uk.

*Women-only groups and programmes at GWL are inclusive of Trans and Intersex women, as well as nonbinary and gender fluid people who are comfortable in a space that centres the experience of women.
