It’s the 1st September.
While thoughts instinctively turn to all things Autumnal, here at Glasgow Women’s Library today marks the first day of our 25th Birthday month. And year. Okay, we do like to spin things out, but we feel that this milestone is really worth celebrating, and so we are proud to launch a year of reflection, celebration and planning for the future – and we want you to be involved.
There are many events coming up that we would love to welcome you all to, kicking off with Herland: Silver Wear – the perfect way to start the celebrations. The stellar line up of special guest performers include our good friend Horse, who has known us all our life, and women younger than we are, including DJ Gyalstas. Don’t miss this party of the year – book your ticket now.
On 17th September we will launch an exhibition that reflects on 25 years of ground-breaking contemporary collecting of women’s history at GWL and our newly launched programme details many other events scheduled over the forthcoming months. Please do join us, we look forward to seeing you!
Whether you are new to GWL or have known about us for 25 years, we always welcome your support through our Friends scheme, which helps to ensure that we will be around for the next 25 years. On the 25th of each month throughout our anniversary year, if you decide to become our Friend on that specific day, you will be in with a chance of receiving one of five special goody bags: so diary the 25th to become a Friend of GWL and support our life-changing work.
We really didn’t know, when the GWL first opened its doors in a tiny shop front in Garnethill on 21 September 1991, that it would grow into what we see today. From a totally unfunded resource with no paid staff, we have created a unique, well-respected national organisation – the only Accredited Museum dedicated to women’s history in the whole of the UK and a designated ‘Recognised Collection of National Significance.’
It’s sometimes been tough. There are times over the past 25 years when we didn’t think we would make it – economic downturns, feminist backlashes and waves of political turmoil have all generated degrees of turbulence that we have needed to overcome. But, of course, it’s mostly been joy, thanks to all of you – and so as always, we want to thank the hundreds of thousands of learners, visitors, supporters, donors, volunteers, staff, Board members, creatives, funders, partners and Friends whose combined vision, investment and trust in Glasgow Women’s Library has enabled it to grow into today’s beautiful, vibrant and welcoming resource.
Please visit us, become a borrower and share your memories and thoughts of GWL. We will use the hashtag #GWL25, tweeting from @GWLKettle.
