Volunteering brings good things

But don’t just take our word for it!  If you would like to find out what it’s like to volunteer with GWL, read about our “alumni” volunteer Iona’s time with us and what she’s been up to since moving on.

“I volunteered at Glasgow Women’s Library for approximately six months. It was an incredibly invaluable experience, for my career as well as my sense of self. By volunteering, I met bright and compassionate people with similar interests and had access to fantastic and hard to find resources. Among other things, my voluntary tasks included classifying new stock with GWL’s unique classification system, providing assistance during Archive Show and Tell sessions and staffing the front desk.

After volunteering, I went on to find employment as a Library Assistant in my local public libraries. Without a doubt, my experience at GWL prepared me for this role and informed my understanding of a library’s duty to create community spirit.
Additionally, I went on to complete a postgraduate degree in Information and Library Studies at University of Strathclyde. Currently, I am working as a School Outreach Librarian at the Mitchell Library.

Volunteering at the GWL can only bring good things, whether it is to further your career prospects, develop nascent interests and hobbies, gain more confidence, meet smart and friendly people, or have the opportunity to read some really good books! The staff are very supportive and encourage each volunteer to fulfill their potential. It certainly worked for me!”
