YiWen Hon was one of GWL’s amazing volunteers in 2012 and has stayed in touch after moving away from Glasgow. In this post she shares with us what she gained from her time at GWL.
“I was a reception volunteer at GWL from December 2011 to July 2012. I first joined GWL because I needed library-related work experience, but I quickly realised that GWL offered not only that but also so much more – the chance to meet women from all walks of life, learn about women’s history, and discuss issues like poverty and women’s health in a safe and welcoming environment. The women I met at GWL were wonderfully helpful, friendly and encouraging. The Librarian, Wendy, showed me how to catalogue books, and the Archivist, Laura, taught me how to handle archival materials.
These experiences at GWL were very useful in my subsequent job applications and interviews, helping me achieve my goal of becoming a fully-qualified librarian. I am currently studying towards a postgraduate degree in Librarianship while working part-time as a library assistant.”
