Zaira, who is originally from Spain, volunteered for several months during which time she developed both her written and spoken English and helped GWL to grow it’s book collection by contacting publishers and asking for donations.
“In August 2012 a friend of mine told me about Glasgow Women’s Library and after a phone call from the lovely Gabrielle I joined the volunteer team. I started by giving a hand at the library’s reception, hoping to gain confidence answering the phone in English, which is not my first language. It really worked as I was backed up by other members of staff, and I didn’t feel pressurised like in other working environment.
It was only a matter of time until I undertook further tasks such as contacting publishers and asking them to support the library through book donations. It was very rewarding to walk in the library and bump into a little pile of parcelled books from publishers, the little gems the library is made up of.
I’m not currently involved with the library due to other commitments but, surely will get back to help them out at some point.”
