Small island by Andrea Levy
Small island is set in an unsettled post WW2 London and tells of the experiences of two new Jamaican immigrants and the British couple that they lodge with. The story relates the prejudice that existed at the time and the unfamiliarity of unknown people and places that often caused fear within the people.
The characters are really convincing and you share their journeys, making them often quite endearing. They all experience quite bleak times, but I think the book is uplifting overall, because of the good moments that they have and because of the way they grow throughout the book. The female characters particularly stand out as they are both very individual and don’t give in to pressure to act a certain way during a time when I think that would be particularly difficult.
