Chantal Akerman, one of the most significant women filmmakers of the 20th and 21st centuries, and one of the monumental figures of feminism film theory and criticism, is coming to Glasgow!
Her 1975 film, Jeanne Dielman, has been named amongst the 20 greatest films of the 20th century by The Village Voice. Upon its release, the New York Times called it “the first masterpiece of the feminine in the history of the cinema”.
Akerman will be at the GFT on Sunday 18th November and will be taking part in a Q&A after a screening of her new film, Almayer’s Folly. It’s a really rich, beautiful film with both feminist and post-colonial themes, based on a Joseph Conrad story, and will be filmed as part of the French Film Festival UK (8th to 30th November).
Throughout the festival period, we’ll be displaying a selection of books that illustrate Akerman’s influencial role in feminist and film theory, and also some books that celebrate the diverse and pioneering achievements of women in film.
If you’re planning to go along to the festival, why not pop in and have a browse?
