A Voice of Dissent: A Woman’s Journey Through the Long Eighteenth Century by Jennifer Kelsey
She uses literature by and for women in the 18th and 19th centuries as evidence of how their lives really were. As there is very little left to us by way of diaries or other factual writing, this transfer of personal experience into fictonal novels is very interesting. I am not a great reader of “literature”, classics or otherwise, but that didn’t matter at all. It is however a relentlessly negative story she tells which could perhaps have done with some evidence that not all women’s lives were terrible!
