Hannah Frank, was born in Glasgow and studied at Glasgow University and the Glasgow School of Art. She produced her hallmark black and white drawings from 1925 onwards.
Between 1927 and 1932 the Glasgow University Magazine rarely came out without a drawing by ‘Al Aaraaf’, her chosen pen name. At this time her drawings had a poetic, melancholy air. However, from the 1940s, after her marriage to Lionel Levy, Hannah’s drawings became light-filled and exuberant. ‘Woman With Birds’ (1947), is a fine representation of her work from this period. The pen and ink drawing was exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1947.
The signed print measures 45cm x 34cm and is particularly special as Hannah had it framed herself and it resided with her during her later years. The frame bears her name and address at Netherlee, which makes it truly unique and the ultimate collector’s item! Donated by Fiona Frank, niece of the late Hannah Frank.
