Introducing Making Space

Did you know there are only 3 statues of women in Glasgow? Find out what GWL is doing to address this imbalance, and how we are contributing to the exciting world of public art, by getting involved with the Making Space project.

Towards a new public artwork for Glasgow

Where are all the statues of women in Scotland? Why are there no street-names commemorating great Scottish heroines? Why are the landmarks of women’s achievements ‘invisible’ in our civic landscape?

Funding from the Scottish Arts Council’s Public Art Fund has enabled the appointment of three new team members to GWL to begin work on the Making Space project, inspired by Glasgow Women’s Library’s planned move to the prestigious Mitchell Library. The team comprises internationally renowned artists Nicky Bird and Shauna McMullan, and Project Co-ordinator and Adviser Fiona Dean.

Over the next 6 months Nicki, Shauna and Fiona will be working with work with Library users and learners, as well as volunteers and staff, to research the possibilities of a new public artwork.

We would love to know what you think about our Making Space project. Please give us your comments here and across the site, or can contact us by phone or email. This project is by, for, and about women in Scotland, so we need you to get involved!

Helloo Shauna,

Where are all the statues of woman across the world!!! How wonderfully exciting these projects are,and oh the thought of a statue of a woman, ANYWOMAN, the woman next door, the woman on the street, we all deserve recognition, we are all heroines in one way or another, to see a statue of a woman somewhere, anywhere, now that would be something wouldn’t it. Look forward to hearing more of this and to seeing this project come to fruition.
I haven’t yet been to the parly building to see the quotes by women, reminds me of Judy Chicago’s project The Dinner Party, that was truly amazing, particularly at a time when the world believed that women to date had achieved, well practically nothing!! Standing in front of all those names made many of us weep with joy, to witness this, and oh those absolutely gorgeous beautiful plates, reclaiming our deep inner beauty was astonishing. Just reading of these projects lifts the heart and the spirit of this old feminist.
I love the idea of the Blue Books, and would be delighted to offer you one of my books by women (or a few if needed) for this exhibition and look forward to receiving details.
Kindest regards, Love and Blessings, Maureen.xxxx

hi
have just read this, and release this is now 1 year later… and I was wondering if you can update the site of the progress. Yes, I agree, it is totally unacceptable that there are only 3 statues of women in Glasgow. and as you say, are there streets named after women?!

Dear Anne Marie,
Thanks for your interest. The Making Space project did go on pause over the last couple of months as Glasgow Women’s Library moved into new premises at the Mitchell Library. But the project is up and running once more – update coming soon! Meanwhile, if you live locally, why not pop into our new space?
Sorry for the break in communication, but I’ll get the latest news up asap,
GWL x
