The Adult Literacy and Numeracy Team are delighted to be working with the young women in Drumchapel again. Our long term literacies support has gone down a storm and the girls have done some fantastic work in the past month. They have so far completed personal mind maps, time lines for their lives so far and started writing about the highlights of their lives. They have considered what they are most proud of within their lives and have looked to ambitions and aspirations for the future. Most recently they have been thinking about how their own opinions count by taking part in group discussions around issues raised by the media.
For the next few months the group have asked the literacies team to support them to write articles for their own column within the local newspaper The Glasgow News, and are also looking forward to updating the group’s Bebo site with lots of news about their adventures. By increasing their confidence in spelling and writing, it is hoped the young women will increase their abilities to input into their own ‘case studies’ and transfer these literacy skills into other aspects of their lives.
The group of around 12 young women are participants in the Aspiring Young Women peer support programme based within the Glasgow West Regeneration Agency. The programme aims to develop the skills of young women from the West area of the city by increasing their self esteem and confidence so they can become ready to apply for work, training or further education and become active, responsible citizens.
They are certainly inspiring Aspiring Young Women!
