The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
I would recommend this book mainly because it is such a beautiful love story! It’s a really fresh, ambitious take on the time travelling theme. It tells the story of Henry, a time-travelling, punk-loving librarian (could there be a better combination?) and his artist wife Clare. They meet when Clare is 6 and Henry is 36 but marry when Claire is 20 and Henry is 28. Confused? Initially I was pretty lost as well, but if you stick with it this book becomes one of those rarities that you really want to devour in one sitting.
Once you get used to Henry’s random and uncontrollable time-travelling between his past, present and future, you can begin to appreciate the poignant love story as it unfolds. Parts of the novel are incredibly moving, such as when Henry and Clare are struggling to conceive the child they so desperately want. There is also some great humour to be derived from Henry’s inability to control when his time travelling might occur (such as his wedding day).
A lovely, unusual book to curl up with now that the nights are ‘fair drawin’ in’.
