1st April 2021 marks two years since coercive control became a crime under the Domestic Abuse Act in Scotland.

Glasgow Women’s Library and Mariam Ahmed (Ethnic Minority Domestic Abuse Expert) are pleased to announce the launch of a coercive control training toolkit to accompany their short film, “Shifting Sands”. To celebrate the launch, we will be hosting an event offering insight into the endless cycle of arguments, guilt and reconciliation suffered by victims.

Charting a journey of survival and hope, Shifting Sands tells a story of a woman in an abusive and controlling relationship that limits her space for action and potential as a human being. This new training resource will illustrate to learners what constitutes coercive control through exploring warnings signs, the impact it can have on a victim’s mental health and the role we play as a society in eradicating domestic abuse.

COVID-19 has presented new challenges for everyone, but particularly for those living with domestic abuse. As we look towards 2021, we must address the inconsistencies in our response and promote a more coherent understanding of coercive control and the impact it can have.

Our event will provide an introduction to our training toolkit, enabling participants to gain a deeper understanding of this type of abuse and how to effectively support victims.

This launch event is free and open to all. Once you’ve booked (below) we’ll send you the Zoom meeting details including the link to watch the film before the event.  The film will be available to watch until midnight on the 1st April.

Trigger warning:  Domestic Abuse, Verbal Abuse

I am so happy to see this kind of behavior  shown as abuse. Especially for young women, this film can educate them to protect themselves and see the signs before it gets too bad” – Participant who attended the Shifting Sands film Launch 2019
