Seeing things

Seeing Things is a group that meet up to see art, performances and cultural events put on by women across Glasgow and beyond. We think it’s more fun to go to see things together, and we usually have a cup of tea or coffee afterwards.  Our trips are always free. It would be great if you could come along!

Tramway’s Unlimited Festival 2018 (17-21 October) platforms exciting new work by disabled artists, with a richly varied programme of dance, live art, installations and film.

As part of the festival we will see Hertz by Juliet Robson and Eleven by Philippa Clark, Isaac Clark-O’Malley and Glas(s).

Eleven is a short film that documents a year in the life of a boy called Isaac and his mum. Isaac is one of many young people living in Scotland that is described as having complex needs. Philippa is Isaac’s Mum as well as being a performance maker living in Glasgow.

For the past year Isaac and Philippa have been filming 11 seconds of footage every day to document their day to day experiences together. They have been using Isaac’s Ipad (which he loves) to do this and have tried to be honest about their highs, lows, joys and challenges each day.

hertz is an artwork by Juliet Robson, in collaboration with academics from fields of astrophysics, meteorology and mathematics. It gives a glimpse into a hidden universe, making inaudible sound tangible, real and visual. hertz questions perceptions, encouraging curiosity in our planet and place in the cosmos through sensory experiences.

We will also see exhibitions: Belt & Road by Samara Scott & Pastoral Drama by Jamie Crewe

Samara Scott has created a large site-specific installation, improvised using fluid and supple materials. Discarded, industrial items pillaged from building sites and motorway passes fuse with organic and found matter from across Glasgow; weeds foraged from pavement crevices, catering waste and items from Chinese supermarkets, hair dressing wholesalers and office supply stores. The installation references the gallery’s likeness to open air structures such as markets, thoroughfares, arcades – spaces of trade, movement, consumption and abandonment which allude to the visible and invisible patterns of the city.

Over the course of a year, Jamie Crewe has worked on Pastoral Drama every day. The piece comprises two parallel videos, played simultaneously, that use allegory and animation to think about progress. These videos are accompanied by new works which expand on the themes of rule-setting, demonic half-people, transgender subjectivity and representational ambivalence.
