Seeing Things visit The Tenement House

2nd August, 2018, 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Seeing things

What: The Tenement House

When: Thursday 2 August 2018 from 1:00-3:00 PM

Where: The Tenement House, 145 Buccleuch St., Garnethill

Who With: Freya and Anna

Why should you join us:

Though it might look like a normal middle-class tenement from the outside, stepping inside the Tenement House is stepping into a rare, authentic time capsule of early 20th-century Glasgow. The rooms of the tenement are faithfully restored to appear “frozen in time,” featuring everything from working gaslights to the original coal-fired kitchen range to a collection of quirky historical items, all of which show what domestic life would have been like for some of the people of Glasgow during that time period.

The tenement was the home of shorthand typist Agnes Toward from 1911 until 1965, and her personal archive of items is an essential part of the character of the Tenement House–all revealing what it meant to be an “independent woman” in the first half of the 20th century.

We will meet outside the Tenement House at 145 Buccleuch Street at 1pm. After our visit to the museum, we will go for a cup of tea and a chat, on us!

If you’d like to come along you can let us know by replying to this email, or email emily.ilett@womenslibrary.org.uk or phoning the library on  0141 550 2267. This trip is free to attend, and we can cover your travel expenses up to £5.

Best wishes,
