and non-binary people of colourResponders of Colour is a new project inspired by the Girls Annuals in our archive and the unsung heroine M’Lani who features in an annual from 1959. M’Lani is one of many women of colour in this collection of books for younger readers whose depiction is problematic, limited and limiting. In Responders of Colour we will come together and rewrite these narratives of a variety of portrayals of women of colour in these annuals, in our own voices and on our own terms.

Responders of Colour, Saturdays 6th February, 6th March, 10th April, 1st May and 5th June, 10.30am to 12.30pm, Online, Women of Colour only, 16+

Each session will start with a discussion of a selection of stories featured in the annuals, followed by a creative writing activity. We will build towards crafting our own responses, with group members encouraged to pick a story from the archive and make it their own.

Get Involved

If you are woman or non-binary person of colour with an interest (no experience necessary!) in creative writing or other creative methods (including poetry, short stories, graphic novels, drawing or song-writing) and/or responding to archives or history –then this project is for you!

The first group work will initially run from January until June, and we ask that you sign up with a view to seeing the project through long term, though we understand if you can’t make it to all six sessions.

Booking

This event takes place online. For more information and to book, please email Nadine.jassat@womenslibrary.org.uk. This event is for women* of colour and non-binary people of colour (16+).

*All women-only events are inclusive of Trans and Intersex women, as well as non-binary and gender fluid people who are comfortable in a space that centres the experience of women.

Accessibility

This session takes place via an online video call link. If you would like to attend, please book and we will share an email invitation along with simple and straight forward instructions on how this will work. If you have any concerns about how this will work for you, please do get in touch and we’ll do all we can to support you in joining the session.

An automated live transcript using Otter.ai is available during this event. We also have a small amount of funding available to provide live captioning through Stagetext for some of our Spring events. Stagetext captioning is provided in-person and is therefore more accurate. Please get in touch with Emily on emily.ilett@womenslibrary.org.uk at least 3 weeks before the event if this would be helpful to you and we’ll work to arrange this. See here for upcoming events where live captioning with Stagetext is arranged.
