Readers of Colour

18th August, 2021, 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Three books standing on a shelf with a plant. The books are New Daughters of Africa, edited by Margaret Busby, which has a black cover with a photo of a black woman looking directly at the reader, her hands clasped behind her head; Where the Wild Ladies Are, by Matsuda Aoko, a yellow cover with a dark abstract shape in the top half, and an illustration of the knees of two women in skirts sitting beside each other; Queenie, by Candace Carty-Williams, a deep pink cover with the head of a black woman in profile, her face not visible, and long braids pulled up into a bun.

Welcome to Readers of Colour. Readers of Colour is a thriving community of women and non-binary readers of colour who come together to read writing by women and non-binary writers of colour!

Readers of Colour, Wednesdays 30th June, 28th July, 18th August and 29th September, 6pm to 7.30pm, Online, Women of Colour only, 16+

We share our laughter and ideas over discussions about the month’s reading or ‘watching’ or ‘listening’ – as we sometimes watch short films or listen to podcasts or music, and occasionally have guest speakers. Rather than reading whole books together, to keep commitment and cost down, we tend to read/ watch/ listen to a small focused piece or selection of pieces each month. You can read more about us and what we’ve discussed in the past at the Readers of Colour page.

If you’re interested in joining the group but you’re not sure what to expect – just come along to a session and listen in, there’s no need to talk or take part in the discussion unless you’d like to! We meet on a Wednesday evening every month via Zoom, with the group facilitated by Nadine Aisha Jassat.

Read more about what we are up to on our blog page here, including book recommendations by group members.

Thank you for convening this beautiful and illuminating group” – Readers of Colour attendee
