Processions and Participation: Banner Making with Helen de Main
5th May, 2018 at 1:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
One hundred years ago, women didn’t just tell the world they were equal: they showed it. What does voting mean to women a century on from the Representation of the People Act 1918?
As this series of banner making workshops comes towards the end we invite all women, even those who haven’t previously joined, to come to support the making of the banner. Whether you’re a sewing pro, a new-be screen printer, or you’d just love to find out what’s been discussed and made so far, join for Saturday 5th May session.
Processions and Participation: Banner Making Workshops, Saturday 24th February, Saturday 3rd March, fortnightly until Saturday 14th April, then Saturday 21st April, and Saturday 5th May, 1pm to 3pm, Women only
Hosted by visual artist Helen de Main, these banner making sessions invite us to talk about what political participation means to us, what our contemporary political concerns are, and to think about the ways in which we can influence and make change in society.
Helen de Main is a visual artist working in print making and sculpture whose practice investigates contemporary and historical depictions of women lives.
Through this series of sessions we will contribute to and create our new banner together. Even if you can’t make it to all the sessions we’d still love you to join us and there’ll be lots of ways you can be involved.
The banner is nearing completion, with some final screen printing and sewing needed to create the finished look. After 5th May we’ll be planning a few additional making drop ins at the library, contact us to find out more. All are welcome to support in these latter stages, even if you missed the earlier sessions.
We will take our banner to Edinburgh on June 10th to march as part of PROCESSIONS by Artichoke and 14-18 NOW, a project bringing thousands of women together in creative workshops leading to UK-wide public processions on Sunday 10th June.
We hope you can make it along to all sessions in this series, to book for individual sessions visit the webpage for that date. New participants will be welcomed. All the session dates can be found here.
