Introductory session for Creative Writing for Muslim Women, 2018

We host an introductory session on Saturday 27th January, 2.30pm to 3.30pm at the Glasgow Women’s Library to share all the information about the workshops. You will get a chance to meet the writers, socialise with other like-minded women and enjoy a tour of Glasgow Women’s Library.

Storying Relationships and GWL are delighted to be offering creative writing workshops for young Muslim women this spring. These workshops will explore literature by local Muslim writers, open up conversations about engaging with texts, develop skills across poetry, short stories and journalism and inspire your writerly observations. All this in a relaxed and supportive environment!

Safina Mazhar is the author of the Power of Four series. The first book in the series, Run To Earth, is her debut novel. She lives in Glasgow with her husband and three children. Safina has been writing about Mages fighting Demons since 2012. Her vivid battle scenes, nail-biting cliff-hanger endings, and plot twists are her writing trademarks.

Safina has received excellent reviews on her books, especially from international readers.

Sara Shaarawi is a playwright, translator and performer from Cairo who is now based in Glasgow. She wrote her first play ‘Niqabi Ninja’ after a staged reading at Mayfesto 2014 at the Tron Theatre, and after receiving funding from Creative Scotland to put on a work-in-progress showing at Platform (Easterhouse, Glasgow). She took part in Playwrights Studio Scotland’s 2015 Mentoring Programme where she received mentoring from playwright Isabel Wright, and developed Bury Me.

Sara was also chosen to be part of the National Theatre of Scotland’s Breakthrough Writers programme, where she developed Lelah. Other credits include dramaturg, performing and translation for David Greig on One Day in Spring (Oran Mor/NTS) and Here’s the News from Over There (Northern Stage). Sara completed Arabic to English translation for both shows. She is currently co-writing, Haneen, a stage adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel 1982, Janine set in contemporary Cairo.

Storying Relationships explores how young British Muslims, particularly those with Pakistani heritage, talk and think about their personal relationships. Particular attention will be paid to relationships issues that may be specific to these groups, and linked to culture or religion.

It explores the role of stories and storytelling in this, focusing on relationship stories that are told in everyday life (with friends, for example) and also media such as fiction, films and radio. It investigates existing stories and also involves participants in making and sharing new stories.
