#WomanOfTheWeek Mary Wollstonecraft

Follow our new campaign called #WomanOfTheWeek. Each week we will focus on a new, important, historical female writer and post about her and her work. We will be highlighting the lives of the well-known, groundbreaking feminist writers, as well as the, sometimes, lesser known female authors. Feel free to contribute! We would love to hear your input as to what female authors you want to learn more about/or perhaps teach us about.

Last week’s #WomanOfTheWeek was Mary Wollstonecraft

#WomanOfTheWeek

Today, Wollstonecraft is considered a feminist pioneer and she has even been described as Britain’s very first feminist. However, at the time of publication of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), “[m]ost reviewers took it to be a sensible treatise on female education and ignored those recommendations in the work that might unsettle the relations between the sexes.” (Janes, 1978). While the work was not widely attacked, in contrast to popular assumptions, the work did not gain the political attention it deserved either. Wollstonecraft’s call for equality was widely ignored and only her treatise on female education was taken seriously.
