“Diversity” fatigue

Sara Ahmed’s amazing book (bible), Living a Feminist Life, has got us nodding our heads and reflecting on our reading of the word “diversity” (something we’ve also heard from Porcia Moore and Shaz Hussein). The museum sector is floating on a sea of “diversity” conversation and conferences at the moment but as Sara Ahmed says “Diversity obscures the issues…it becomes a technique for not addressing inequalities by allowing institutions to appear happy.” It’s important for us all at GWL and on the Equality in Progress project to ensure that the underpinning problems we seek to reverse are held aloft, spoken, made explicit and known. And in that vein we’ve made a mini clip to demonstrate the power and importance of stating the issues that underpin the “shiny apple” of “diversity”.
