Solidarity, sisterhood and song – my first two years at GWL

I was hiding in a toilet in Castlemilk when I got a phone call from GWL’s Adele Partick, telling me I’d got a job. Adele was so nice I assumed I had been unsuccessful – but it seemed I really was going to be paid to host discussions about sex. Such overwhelming kindness, pioneering projects, and bold, unapologetic hilarity have become hallmarks of my time at GWL.

Having joined the team in January 2015 I’ve worked on four projects so far. With the National team I led workshops from Paisley, to prison, to mysterious corners of East Dumbartonshire. Last summer I facilitated our Sex in the Women’s Library discussions, which were profoundly moving and enormous fun, and this I summer I led protest song workshops, culminating in a performance of Suffragette marching songs on Glasgow Green! My main focus has been our wonderful Young Critics project, supporting young women to engage with the arts.

GWL is a joyous whirlygig, twirling at full pelt while staying highly functional and genuinely living out our values! My chosen objects from our Collection are songbooks. They speak of passing knowledge from one generation to the next, of solidarity, and of sisterhood. Just like GWL.
