In this Guest Blog we hear from Ashley at Girls Rock School Edinburgh, a non-profit organisation that aims to empower women through music, about the beginning of their Autumn term and their important instrument fundraising campaign.
Girls Rock School Edinburgh is a non-profit organisation loosely based on the U.S. Rock n Roll Camp for Girls model, the first of its kind in Scotland. Our aim is to empower women through music by providing fun and accessible classes and workshops in which confidence is built and relationships are created.
During the spring term, I was a participant at GRS taking the vocals class, one of four classes taught over the 6 week programme. The drums, bass, guitar and vocals students all came together at the end of the term for a graduation ceremony and an excellent jam session. It was an incredibly amazing experience, I came away with new friends, a huge confidence boost and a drive to make music; I have started writing songs again and have convinced my teenage band to get back to gether!
After the spring term ended I joined the GRS committee as their campaign manager and am now helping to organise and promote the autumn term. We plan to run the same classes as before with the addition of a sound engineering workshop and a showcase gig to finish of the term. We have applied for funding but are unsure of how much we will receive which has lead us to set up an Indie Go Go campaign in order to pay for the instruments that we require. We have had a great response so far but still have £305 to acquire and only a month left to obtain it!
