Five reasons to become a GWL Young Critic

Our Young Critics are our A-team of young women, who get a chance to review not only the great things on at the Glasgow Women’s Library, but also related events across the city and beyond. We meet every second Wednesday afternoon and spend every other week seeing something – including art exhibitions, book events, films, dance pieces or plays and lots more besides.

Young Critics get plenty of support along the way.

In August we’re starting a new block of sessions and we’re looking for new members. To be eligible you need to be 16-25 and interested in learning more about arts and the media.

Our sessions are geared at people who don’t have much previous experience, and we particular welcome members who don’t usually do this sort of thing. So come and try something new!

We asked our current Young Critics for five reasons why you should join. Here’s what they came up with:

  1. You’ll get the chance to see things that you wouldn’t otherwise go to on your own. Our Young Critics have been to see all sorts of events at the Glasgow Women’s Library including our spectacular March of Women event. But they’ve also had the chance to see a wide-range of work by (and about) women including plays at the Citizen’s theatre, dance pieces at Tramway and even opera. And it’s all free.
  2. You’ll have an opportunity to learn lots of new skills.Want to try blogging, find out how to write a engaging review, or even make a simple podcast? Our Young Critics get the chance to learn how to do all of this and more. And if you fancy starting up your own blog or online radio show afterwards, all the better!
  3. You get the chance to meet some really interesting people. We’ve worked with award-winning journalists and radio producers, kick-ass bloggers, and met inspiring artists, dancers, authors and singers. Who would you like to meet?
  4. You’ll be encouraged to think your opinion is worthwhile. Reckon you don’t know anything about art and culture? You know much more than you think. We’ll help you express your own opinion in a balanced and informed way. Your view as a young woman matters!
  5. You’ll have fun! You get to try out new things, visit new places and hang out with a cool group of young women. What’s not to like? Email us now and  put your name down for our next block of Young Critics sessions, starting in September.
