Untold Stories of East Dunbartonshire Women

Glasgow Women’s Library have been working with the East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trails and Tales project and local people to uncover the hidden stories of women in East Dunbartonshire. At sessions in Torrance, Kirkintilloch, Westerton, Lenzie and Lennoxtown, we’ve been mapping and recording stories of well-known and unsung heroines.

The wealth of local knowledge has been amazing and it’s been fascinating to hear about people such as Miss Pirie, girl-guide leader from Torrance who had a formative effect on the lives of many local women. The group created lovely hand made maps at each session highlighting some of the women and stories they remembered and these maps are being digitized and made accessible for all to see and interact with.

Our connection with the project has also led to some unique artefacts finding a new audience when the log books of Miss Pirie were exhibited in digital format as part of GWL’s Harpies, Fechters and Quines festival in Edinburgh in June 2015. The Tales and Trails project is a three year project supported by the  Heritage Lottery Fund and Creative Scotland.

Glasgow Women’s library will be delivering more sessions gathering untold stories of women in East Dunbartonshire in Bishopbriggs, Twechar and Baldernock in autumn 2015. See our autumn programme due out soon or to find out more  about the Trails and Tales project, go to www.trailsandtales.org
