Starbuck, what do your hear ? Nothing but the rain.

As the skies open here in Glasgow and the streets look like the backdrop for “Bladerunner”, my mission goes on. I must say a big thank you to all of you who took the time to comment on the last blog post – I was completely overwhelmed and delighted at the response.

What I would like to do next is set a date for a meet-up in the library, where women might bring along and share their favourite books and I can also talk about my plans. I’m just waiting to hear back about that and will hopefully be able to post a time and venue soon.

I’ve also made a short wishlist of books, which our dear librarian Wendy might be able to obtain from publishers for reviewing. And I’ve e-mailed Forbidden Planet, A1 Comics, Geek Retreat and Plan B Books to gauge their level of input, if any. If anyone out there has any contacts in the industry – publishers, bookstores, events organisers – I’d be happy for an introduction. I’ve had some great support from http://broaduniverse.org/ so far.

Has anyone ever been to Collectormania or MCM Scotland Comic Con? I know both are coming up but I’m not sure if they are worth the expense of going to at this early stage. It would be lovely to see Eve Myles from “Torchwood”. Are any of you good folks out there planning to go?

In the meantime, I’m cracking on with my reading. I was chuffed to find I still had a copy of  “Women Of Wonder”and I am waiting for Glasgow Libraries to transport Cherie Priest’s “Boneshaker”. Sadly, I finished my “Battlestar Galactica” boxset and am now dipping a tentative toe into “Defiance”, although it’s not grabbing me yet. Let me know in the comments what TV shows or movies you’d recommend.

I’m off to grab my gun and bring the cat in.

One reply on “Starbuck, what do your hear ? Nothing but the rain.”

I’ve never been to a con – people’s experiences of them seem to vary wildly, but I’ve not heard much about the local ones. I’m an inveterate film festival goer, however, which reminds me of a doc I saw at this year’s GFF – Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines, which looks at the impact of Wonder Woman and other media superheroines* on the girls and young women who read/watch them. (I also saw Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope, about the con di tutti con, SDCC – I can’t say I’m entirely sold on the experience!)

I’ve had a hard time thinking of any recent SF shows, let alone ones with good female characters… Warehouse 13, maybe? Which is fun, and terribly, deeply silly. Or Sanctuary, which is sort of on the cusp between SF and fantasy – but as it stars Amanda Tapping, it mostly just makes me nostalgic for good ol’ Stargate :)

I’ve heard good things about Continuum but haven’t had a chance to try it (like the other two, it’s a SyFy show, so ‘good’ is likely to be relative – it is the channel that just screened Sharknado…)

I’ve probably given myself away here – as fantastic as Battlestar is, I have an abiding affection for more up-beat SF, even if the quality isn’t so high – Stargate being a case in point. The quality varies wildly, and the ‘science’ of its SF is closer to fantasy, but at its best, it’s incredibly entertaining. And Sam Carter is definitely a great SF heroine (She’s a physicist! She saves the galaxy with science! How could I not love her? :)

Have you watched Farscape? Aeryn Sun is one of my all-time heroines – she could so easily have fallen into clichéd ‘Strong Female Character’ tropes, but she’s far more complex and interesting. And Farscape is delightfully bizarre overall.

*I think it’s telling that my browser thinks ‘superheroines’ is a misspelling…

Next year, in San Diego!
