Public Art Fund award for ‘Making Space’

We’re pleased to announce that the Library has been awarded funding from the Scottish Arts Council for a new public art project, ‘Making Space’. This is the first stage of a project to develop an exciting new public artwork for GWL when we move to the Mitchell Library.

The project has its origins in a need to address women’s historical absence from the city’s landscape. The new artwork will help to increase women’s cultural and creative presence in a significant public space, at the entrance of the Library’s new space at the Mitchell Library.

First steps in Making Space

In this initial stage, two artists-in-residence will work with a whole range of Library users and learners to undertake research and test ideas to develop a brief for the proposed new public artwork.

We will be advertising for artists to be involved in this exciting project in the near future – please check back to the website for more information.

The Library’s ‘Making Space’ project is one of just 8 projects from across Scotland being supported by the Scottish Arts Council’s new Public Art Fund.

What an opportunity to have a statue of a woman in this space.I think Councillor Liz Cameron would push for additional funding . There must be many Glasgow women from past struggles who deserve to be remembered and we have too many statues of male achievers within the city

NO, no, and please no again a statue would be a weste of a wonderful opportunity to employ a contemporary, switched on feminist artist to engage women in creating something exciting and new.

Thanks for your comments – we’re looking for input from as many women as possible for this project, to develop the right artwork for the new Library.

Please keep in touch with the Library, through the website and our blog, as ‘Making Space’ develops.

I am thrilled that people feel so strongly about this and I would encourage everyone who has a view to get involved! The project will be underway soon so please keep an eye out on the website for information on the artist selection process and also how you can feed in your ideas and be active in the process.
Thanks for all the input so far…

The funding for a public artwork is great news. It would be great if it was of WOMAM rather than a specific woman and certainly MODERN WOMAN. I would be very interested to be involved in this project.

I feel that a statue would raise awareness that women have been producing art for centuries and that all women’s art needs a higher profile, at every level, but especially Scottish women artists in Scotland. I was talking to an undergarduate fine art student recently who had never heard of Judy Chicago and her wonderful table cloth, she is personally struggling with a male tutor who is questioning the validity of her work! I would love to be involved with this, thanks.
