More prizes confirmed for our winter raffle.

Thanks to the kind generosity of CCA, we have four tickets to be won for the following film night on Thursday 27 January, 7pm:

Three short films selected by Madelon Hooykaas to accompany the exhibition Revealing the Invisible: The Art of Stansfield/Hooykaas from Different Perspectives at CCA.

Madelon Hooykaas was born in 1942 (Maartensdijk, The Netherlands) and lives and works in Amsterdam. Ella Stansfield was born in 1945 in Glasgow and died of leukaemia in Amsterdam in 2004. The two artists worked in collaboration under the title Stansfield / Hooykaas since 1972 and belong to the first generation of video artists. They are considered pioneers in their field, with their work influencing many video and multimedia artists today. In 1996 they received the Judith Leyster prize for their oeuvre.

One of these days

The Netherlands, 1973, 30 min.

Directed by Elsa Stansfield and Madelon Hooykaas with music by Delia Derbyshire.

One of these days was made as an image impression of Marte Roling, an Amsterdam designer. Integrating the familiar occurrences of an ordinary day with the aural and visual stimuli of the city, the film captures the ambiance of her life. Commissioned by NOS.

About Bridges

The Netherlands, 1975, 22 min.

Directed by Elsa Stansfield and Madelon Hooykaas with music by Delia Derbyshire. Written by Madelon Hooykaas.

About Bridges shows the perception and the experience of bridges in three different ways: by the artist, the worker and the user. The film is presented as a cinematic equivalent to the experience of crossing a bridge. The film was conceived and shot in Amsterdam, a city of bridges, and follows three interwoven working themes.

Daydreams

The Netherlands, 1972, 8 min

Directed by Madelon Hooykaas with text by Panayota Kampoli.

In Daydreams, Madelon Hooykaas and Elsa Stansfield are preoccupied by the thoughts and memories that cross a person’s mind during the transitional moment of waking up and getting out of bed.

For a chance to win these cinema tickets, and many other fantastic prizes, buy a raffle ticket asap – we are grateful for your support.

It’s coming up to the time of the year when the shops get really hot and busy, you are fed up of hearing Jingle Bells everywhere you go and online shopping looks so appealing. You know which online stores you want to go to and it’s time to get buying…

Sound familiar? Then here’s how you can help GWL with no extra expense.

It takes just a few minutes to go to the Easy Fundraising website and register, choosing Glasgow Women’s Library as your charity. Then every time you shop online GWL could benefit at no extra cost to you!

The only thing you have to do for GWL to receive a donation from the 2000 plus participating companies is:

log in to your account at http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/

use their links to company websites (see the categories section on the left hand side or the popular links section on the right-hand side)

carry on buying as you normally would – you need do nothing more!

Examples of money we could receive include:

Amazon – 2.5% of what you spend (so for every £10 you spend GWL gets 25 pence and you pay nothing extra)

Waterstones – 2.5%

Marks & Spencers – 2.5%

Argos – 1.5%

Boots – 3%

Play.com – 1%

HMV – 2%

…and many, many more. It may not sound like a huge amount but every penny really counts!

Even better – if you are thinking of changing your energy supplier, broadband supplier or your car, house, travel, even pet insurance, GWL could receive quite substantial amounts of money ranging from £5 to £55 pounds! Have a look and see whether your preferred provider will give GWL a donation when you switch – the chances are they will.

Finally some companies will make donations to GWL when you sign up for things like a 14 day free trial for Lovefilm (£5.00 donation) or register on Ebay (£4.50 donation). Click on the Free Funds tab near the top of the page.

Please take the time to sign up if you can and remember to log in to your favourite shopping sites via http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/ each time you shop. You really could make a difference!

And don’t worry if you are not in the position to help us through online shopping. If you make http://gwl.easysearch.org.uk/ your search engine (instead of Google or similar search sites) then you can still raise money for us just by doing a few searches every day.

It’s been creeping upon us for quite a while, but finally Glasgow Women’s Library is on the move for what may just be the very last time… We are packing up our papers and all our work, stacking boxes, watching the removal men lift them, and saying our farewells to Parnie Street. As we are closed for all intents and purposes over the next few weeks, here is a little peek into our Biggest Move Ever (every moment of which will be rigorously documented!).

Spring may have finally sprung but it is certainly not a time for resting on your laurels. At the library we are underway with preparing for a fundraising event, due to take place in September at the beautiful St Andrew’s in the Square. The Auction of Pleasures is a nod to the library’s 20 year history (a similar event took place in 1990) and will hopefully provide us with the essential funds required to move to our new permanent home at The Mitchell Library.

The questions we are currently asking ourselves are what exactly is a pleasure, and how does one go about auctioning one? At the auction in 1990 you could bid for a footwashing ceremony, handmade Belgian chocolates, or you could get your head shaved by a sculptor! Over the next few weeks we will be assembling our own delectable list of delights. If you are as excited as I am about keeping up to date with how preparations are going for the event, or you would like to let us know what pleasure you would like to see at an Auction of Pleasures, keep checking in with the blog…

In the meantime remember that if you are resting on your laurels you are wearing them in the wrong place!

We're still trying to get back to normal after last week's flood, but we're getting there...

We’re still trying to get back to normal after last week’s flood, but we’re getting there.

The office had to be re-wired, but by the end of last Wednesday we were able to have de-humidifiers and heaters running in the office to speed up the drying process. The lights were fixed yesterday, and we’re hoping that today will be that last day that we’ll have the de-humidifiers running, and we’ll be able to get back into the office tomorrow.

Of course, even though our office has been out of action, we haven’t! The ESOL classes weren’t able to run last week, but have now started up again. Some staff worked from home or had outreach work and meetings outside the library, while the rest of us alternated between working in the GWL kitchen (keeping an eye on the dehumidifiers) and pigbacking on our neighbours wifi over at 103 Trongate – many thanks to GMAC for the loan of a spare room and their wifi last week, and to KOG cafe for wifi last Tuesday.

Our thanks to Helen, Chris et al from Wasps, who helped with mitigating some of the worst of the flooding in the building. And thanks to the GCC joiner and electricians who’ve been working to ensure our office is safe for us to go back to.

Many thanks also to all of you who have offered kind words and support, by phone and email, and here on the blog.

Many of you have been asking the ever present question – when are we moving to the Mitchell? I’m sure that it’s as frustrating to you as to all of us on the Library team, knowing that we’re so close to moving to new premises, but still being stuck in a cold and occasionally sodden temporary space here in Parnie Street. The simple answer is that as soon as we have raised the funds, we will be able to start work on renovating our future home in the Mitchell Library. Although we have raised some of the capital funds, with grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Robertson Trust and the Scottish Arts Council, we still have a long way to go.

Large grants and funds are, of course, a part of this, but your support is just as important. The Women on the Shelf initiative is a crucial part of our effort to raise money for the move, and allows you to be a real part of the future Women’s Library. By sponsoring a shelf, book or section in the new Women’s Library, you’re ensuring that the Library collection and archive will have a secure, custom-built (dry!) home where it is fully accessible.

We're having a clear-out of our library and archive area, and there are a number of ways you can help!

We’re having a clear-out of our library and archive area.

If you’d like to help, you can do so in a number of ways:

Come along Thursday 1st and/or Friday 2nd October to help move boxes and tidy up. Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty in and bring along a duster!

Do you have any spare plastic boxes that you would like to donate to the library? We’re looking for plastic boxes with lids, ideally around 55 x 30 x 40 cm (or 22″ x 11.5″ x 15.5″) in size.

If you shop on the internet did you know that you can raise money for GWL without spending a penny extra? Just go to http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/, register and choose Glasgow Women’s Library as the charity you wish to support. All you have to do after that is log in to Easy Fundraising each time you shop online and use their links to access your favourite sites.

More than 600 major retailers including Amazon, Argos, Boots, Currys, John Lewis, PC World, Play.com, Tesco, Waterstones, etc. have signed up and will pass on a percentage of what you spend to us. If you are in the market for Insurance (Bike, Car, Home, Pet, Travel, Life) we can receive sums ranging from £7.50 to £50.00 depending on the company! There are also offers such as sign up to LoveFilm for a fourteen day free trial and they will pay us £8.00. As long as you cancel your subscription within 14 days you will pay nothing.

You use the same secure servers for purchasing and will pay exactly the same amount as you would if you entered each site though Google or Yahoo.

This only adds a few seconds to your shop and could earn GWL some valuable additional income to help us on our way to our new home. Please give it a try!
