SUMMARY:My Glasgow Granny from Donegal
DESCRIPTION:Is there a woman from your past who made the journey to Scotland from Ireland? Why not come along to one of three sessions at the library on Thursday 15th March 2012 to share stories about the tales of your female relatives who came over to Glasgow from Ireland. These sessions are an opportunity to meet Rachael Flynn\, the artist-researcher running this project in a relaxed spaces with tea\, coffee and chatter. Rachael is working as part of the Scottish Centre for Island Studies. Her current research is a response to the narrative of her grandmother who left Donegal in the 1930’s to find work in Glasgow. The work she makes is a response to the written letters between her grandmother and the family she left behind\, the fables\, anecdotes and memories weaved by family members\, and the social histories of the various women who made similar journeys. My Glasgow Granny from Donegal project will give the public an opportunity to recognize and pay honor to such women who faced vast challenges and obstacles in order to shape their own futures. There will be 3 sessions on Thursday 15th March: 3pm to 4pm\, or 4.15pm to 5.15pm\, or 5.30pm to 6.30pm Spaces are limited but we would love to accommodate everyone so please register your interest so we can plan for this. If you are interested in coming along and taking part please contact us on 0141 248 9969 or fill out a booking form here. You are also most welcome to forward any thoughts or questions to Rachael directly\, her email address is Rachael.flynn@uws.ac.uk. Rachael is also launching a project in which women will be able to add the names of these ancestors to an artist’s book which will start to build up a collection that seeks to move beyond formal data to create a human and embodied document. By adding the names of their Irish mothers\, grandmothers\, great grandmothers\, aunts\, cousins… the women who visit the book in the library will have the chance to effectively ‘light a candle’ in memory of these relatives. In creating this work she is hoping to raise awareness of such women\, but also to open up the opportunity for people to share the stories that are part of their personal histories. By acknowledging these accounts there is the opportunity to become empowered by the perseverance\, strength and spirit of our female ancestors. All of the activities and experiences of this process will culminate and build towards a developed exhibition of this material which reflects the subject matter of the women who originally made such a brave journey. Hopefully weaved through this will be the ‘journeys’ made by the women involved in this project as we share stories and pass these books between each other. Rachael Flynn is an artist and PhD Research student currently working as part of the Scottish Centre for Island Studies\, University of the West of Scotland. Rachael completed her Undergraduate degree from the School of Fine Art\, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art\, and went on to study and be awarded her MA at Goldsmiths\, University of London. During her time studying Rachael received various opportunities through awards from The Scottish Sculpture Workshops (Residency award 2006)\, The Angus Memorial Sculpture Prize\, The Hunting Art Prize Competition (Young Artist of the Year runner up\, Royal College of Art 2004)\, Carnegie Undergraduate traveling Scholarship (Australia 2004)\, and Outstanding Film Achievement Award by Honorable Goldsmiths Society\, Creation II (London). Within the creative industries Rachael has worked with independent film-makers\, artists\, research groups and production companies. These include Paul Watson (Bafta Lifetime Achievement winner)\, Juniper Television (productions - The Indian Miracle? [Channel 4] & Battle for the Holy Land\, Love Thy Neighbor [Channel 4])\, Generator Projects (artist-run space)\, Wendy Ramshaw OBE\, Professor David Watkins (RCA)\, and BBC London (Watchdog\, BBC Politics Show).

SUMMARY:Displaced Women Conference
DESCRIPTION:Multilingual narratives of migration in Europe Wednesday 28th to Friday 30th March 2012 This interdisciplinary conference will provide a forum for discussion of the issues facing women who have moved from one culture to another and have adopted in their daily lives and creative work a language other than their ‘mother tongue’. We will look at the creative\, linguistic\, economic and psychological effects of this displacement. The critical examination of women’s narratives in Europe (fiction\, poetry\, diaries\, memoirs\, pamphlets)\, from a literary perspective will be complemented by sessions looking at these issues from a historical\, political and sociological perspective. The broad nature of this conference provides an excellent opportunity for exchange between researchers in different disciplines who do not always have the chance to come together. For more information on the Displaced Women event or to book your place please visit the event organisers website: www.literatureandphilosophy.com If you are interested in women and migration check out our publication She Settles in the Shields that we are launching on International Women's Day at the Library.

Thursday 19th April 6pm to 7.30pm £3/free The Library has evocative materials recording the history of women’s work in the First World War munitions factories. We are inviting anyone who has memories of their female relatives involvement in this vital work to share their memories and we will capture these for the GWL archive. There will also be some fabulous footage of women working in munitions presented by Scottish Screen at this session. We offer subsidised and/or free places for students\, people on a low income\, unemployed or those in receipt of benefit and Friends of GWL. If you are entitled to a subsidised/free place please click here to book. If you are interested in women's history then perhaps you know of a memorial to a woman in your area that hasn’t been marked on our Women of Scotland map? Or maybe you know the story behind a name? We want women across Scotland to go out and find the monuments\, landmarks\, street names and buildings that mark the lives and achievements of women (whether famous\, humble or notorious) who have helped to shape Scotland. We are launching Mapping Monuments to Women on Saturday 10th March to mark International Women's Day. Click here for more information.

SUMMARY:Mapping Monuments to Women Launch
DESCRIPTION: All over Scotland there are many types of memorials\, large and small\, commemorating the lives and achievements of women. The stories behind some names are well known; others have been forgotten. All the women have contributed in some way to the life of the country we know today. In 2011\, GWL worked with Women’s History Scotland and Girlguiding Scotland on The Big Name Hunt\, encouraging girls and young women to explore their local area\, record memorials to women and uncover their stories. The Women of Scotland website was set up to record this information and make it available to all. The Big Name Hunt is now drawing to a close\, but many memorials to women remain undocumented\, and the website is being opened up to allow everyone to contribute.Perhaps you know of a memorial to a woman in your area that hasn’t been marked on our map? Or maybe you know the story behind a name? On Saturday 10th March\, we want women across Scotland to go out and find the monuments\, landmarks\, street names and buildings that mark the lives and achievements of women (whether famous\, humble or notorious) who have helped to shape Scotland. GWL staff\, volunteers and some of our Women Make History detectives will be on hand and online to help groups locate memorials\, with documentation and inputting into the website. Visit the Women of Scotland website in March to find out more about how you can get involved.

Women Make History: East End Detectives Starts Tuesday 17th April\, 6pm to 7.30pm These weekly informal sessions suitable for any level and supported by GWL staff looking into this rich area of women’s history in Glasgow's East End. If you are interested but not sure what this involves then why not check out our One Small Step video below. You can then register your interest by booking on to the workshops here. One Small Step from Glasgow Women's Library on Vimeo. These sessions are free and supported by Historic Glasgow. Click here to book your place. If you are interested in women's history then perhaps you know of a memorial to a woman in your area that hasn’t been marked on our Women of Scotland map? Or maybe you know the story behind a name? Maybe you'll uncover some at these sessions. We want women across Scotland to go out and find the monuments\, landmarks\, street names and buildings that mark the lives and achievements of women (whether famous\, humble or notorious) who have helped to shape Scotland. SUMMARY:CANCELLED! Book4Book
DESCRIPTION: Unfortunately we have had to cancel this event due to low take up. If you had been thinking of coming along or know of anyone who was please pass on this information as it will no longer be going ahead - this is a great example of why we ask people to book in advance\, it allows us to gauge interest and stops us from having to cancel events like this\, such a shame as we were looking forward to working with some up and coming writers from Linen Press. If you had been planning to come along but had not booked a place please contact us so that we can make a note of anyone interested. Bring a book. Bring yourself. Grab a cuppa. Grab a seat. Have a listen. Have a chat at GWL’s first Book4Book event! Most literary establishment prizes are handed to male writers\, leaving the lyricism of the female voice unheard and unacknowledged. We want to celebrate those voices in all their individuality and wisdom - to showcase female writing across its wide spectrum\, from emergent writers to those who are well known. So bring along your favourite book by a female author\, have a chat with the writers from Linen Press and maybe swap your book 4 someone else’s! Thursday 10 November\, 5.30pm to 7.30pm (£5/free)

SUMMARY:Gender Shift: Women Who Make Men
DESCRIPTION: A conversation on the creation of male characters by women between Drag King Pioneer Diane Torr and acclaimed Scottish writer Zoë Strachan. Thursday 17th November\, 6pm to 7.30pm (£3/free) Diane Torr has been teaching women how to dress and pass as men on city streets around the world for twenty years. Zoë Strachan has recently published her third novel and has\, for the first time\, created a gay male protagonist. What happens when women ‘inhabit’ the bodies and psyches of men? What can be learnt by undertaking this gender shift and how has this work\, along with the work of other women writers and performers playing with sex and gender\, impacted on ideas of gender and masculinity. Booking is essential. To register your interest please complete the quick booking form below or call us on 0141 248 9969. If you are not already a member of the library you can join here and it is completely free. Both authors will have books available to purchase on the evening and will be available for signing copies. More information below. Diane Torr\, "Sex\, Drag and Male Roles: Investigating Gender as Performance"\, co-authored by Stephen Bottoms and published by the University of Michigan Press. "Few books blend the critical and creative approaches to drag performance this provocatively and engagingly\, and none provides both the historical and the personal perspectives so effectively. Torr and Bottoms fundamentally challenge many long-standing ideas about drag kings and the performance of masculinity." — Sarah Bay-Cheng\, University at Buffalo "This book brings the reader inside an artist's creative imagination and intellect\, showing us Diane Torr's work in a detailed\, thoughtful\, and engaging way. We discover how Torr uses different physical disciplines to explore how gender is constructed\, interpreted\, and expressed. Along the way—by taking us into various venues in which she performed—she evokes the lively\, dynamic scene in New York in the '80s and '90s." — Alisa Solomon\, Columbia University Zoë Strachan\, "Ever Fallen in Love" (Sandstone Press) shortlisted for the Green Carnation Prize for LGBT literature 2011. 'Strachan’s maturity and insight shows through the beautifully constructed pages. The tempo stays effortlessly high and the tension keeps building along with Richard’s desire. . . . Ever Fallen In Love might be the one to catapult her into the mainstream' - Gutter magazine 'There is no doubt this is a hard-boiled book and it pulls no punches. Strachan writes in great detail about the psychology of her protagonists with objectivity and perception. The incredible trick she pulls off is that we do end up identifying with her introverted hero Richard\, mainly because his journey is so complex and constantly blighted by his hopeless sexual obsession with the straight\, taunting\, malignant Luke' - Alice Thompson\, Scottish Review of Books 'The novel excels at evoking the mind games\, the vile but subtly plotted erosion which one driven friend can exert on another. The first-person segments power the narrative\, dragging the reader into the layers of tangled dependence as Richard falls foul of Luke’s excesses . . . astute\, intelligent\, almost entirely convincing' - Tom Adair\, Scotsman 'Ever Fallen in Love doesn’t disappoint. A quietly unsettling take on the coming-of-age genre\, Strachan’s novel avoids the more obvious shock-factor conclusion and instead continually teeters on the edge. Unafraid of the unspoken and the unresolved\, the story gets under your skin and lingers there uncomfortably' - Lucy Scholes\, Sunday Times [contact-form-7 id="5813" title="Quick booking form"]
