Project X: Dances of the African Diaspora

Project X is an educational, cultural programme, profiling and celebrating the dances of the African diaspora.  Throughout 2017, dance workshops, performances and events will take place across Glasgow.

In collaboration with GWL, Project X will be screen two African dance films curated by Africa in Motion Film Festival. Project X will screen She Poems: Shorts about Dance followed by Movement (R)evolution Africa.

She Poems is a contemporary art project made in Africa with African women artists and directed by Aïds. She Poems is a tribute to African women through poems written by women. See a preview and find out more about She Poems here.

In Movement (R)evolution Africa (a story of an art form in four acts), nine African choreographers tell stories of an emergent art form and their diverse and deeply contemporary expressions of self. Stunning choreography and riveting critiques challenge

The screening will be followed by two dance workshops for adults on Thursday 10th and Saturday 12th August. In these workshops we will be learning traditional and contemporary dances of the African Diaspora and exploring their cultural connections. From Kuku and Hoofing to Tap, Dancehall and Hip Hop, we will discover a hidden history of dance one “step” at a time!
