In Her Shoes: Gender and Prejudice

29th March, 2017, 10:30am to 1:00pm

Free

Since our In Her Shoes project began in March 2016, women who’ve been subjected to hostility targetedgenderprejudice at their gender identity, sexuality, religion, race and disability have shared with us their experiences and acts of resistance against prejudice and discrimination.

Our In Her Shoes: Gender and Prejudice event, will explore current academic, creative and community work on the themes of women’s intersectional experiences of hate crime.

In Her Shoes Development Worker, Rachel Thain-Gray will discuss taking inspiration from historical and contemporary creative methods of black, lesbian and feminist art activism. And will launch the film of the In Her Shoes choreographed ‘protest’ No-one can harm me unpunished. I am a woman. which was developed and performed by project participants.

This accessible event is an opportunity for women with lived experience of targeted hostility to come together with practitioners in prejudice reduction to share learning.

The programme for this event is available to view HERE

Maureen McBride is a PhD Researcher at the University of Glasgow, based in the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research. Maureen’s research is intended to develop a more critical and theoretically-informed approach to the study of sectarianism in Scotland than the current mainstream scholarship offers. Her publications include ‘Can new legislation succeed in wiping out the sectarian problem in Scotland?’ (in Scottish Association for the Study of Offending Journal, 2014); a report for the Scottish Government entitled ‘ What works to reduce prejudice and discrimination? A review of the evidence’, (2015); and A Review of the Evidence on Hate Crime and Prejudice: Report for the Independent Advisory Group on Hate Crime, Prejudice and Community Cohesion (2016).

Dr Francesca Stella – Wellbeing, prejudice and discrimination among LGBT migrants from Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union in Scotland

I am a Lecturer in Sociology at the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Glasgow. My research and teaching focus on sexuality, gender and migration. I am lead investigator on the ESRC-funded project ‘Intimate migrations: lesbian, gay and bisexual migrants in Scotland’ (2015-17). The project focuses on intra-European migration from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, and explores the role of sexuality and ethnonational background in decisions to migrate, experiences of resettlement and in the development of migrants’ social networks. My previous research projects included: an ethnography on lesbian and bisexual lives in contemporary Russia; a project on ‘lesbian’ relationships in Soviet Russia; a research report on LGBT asylum in Scotland; and involvement in a knowledge exchange project on translating Russian and Eastern European Cultures. I am a member of GRAMNet, a research and knowledge exchange network bringing together researchers and practitioners working on migration.
