Reading and talking about books in a supportive group can improve well being, improve skills and even be inspirational. Could you help the library’s national lifelong learning programme develop a reading circle for women in the Dumfries area?

GWL has a range of national resources for women, including a satellite book collection in the Ewart library in Dumfries. We hope to develop a women’s reading circle where women can read and discuss books from GWL’s collection and maybe offer a few suggestions themselves about books by women authors which they have found helpful or inspirational. We need a locally based woman who can help our national team in supporting a reading circle which will meet on a monthly basis in Dumfries. This is a chance to make new friends, discover new women authors, develop your own skills and also help other women improve their skills and confidence in reading.

This role will involve:

Communicating with potential group members by phone/e-mail or face to face

Supporting the group at monthly meetings in talking about and exchanging books

Occassional attendance at events and distribution of publicity to promote the group

A commitment of approx 2-3 hours per week (flexible)

Volunteers should have good communication skills, experience or an interest in working with groups in the community, the ability to motivate and encourage women from all backgrounds, the ability to work on their own initiative and an interest in reading and books.

Travelling expenses (public transport rate ) will be covered and regular support will be given through our national lifelong learning team. To apply or for more information contact Morag Smith on 0141 248 9969 or e-mail info@womenslibrary.org.uk

In order to celebrate Contradictory Woolf, The 21st Annual Conference on Virginia Woolf, held at Glasgow University in June 2011, curator Kitty Anderson and artists Anne-Marie Copestake, Kate Davis, Rachel Lowther and Lorna Macintyre developed a new collaborative art project.

Drawing inspiration from a series of reading groups looking at Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, alongside the conference theme, they created a series of limited edition risograph prints and bags, each of which honours a variety of female figures, past and present.

These works are for sale and all the proceeds go to Glasgow Women’s Library’s Women Leading Through Reading programme which supports the development of women’s literacy and communication skills in a range of different communities.

Wigtown Women’s Walk group have now been active for almost three and a half years. This group of dedicated volunteers from the local community have accomplished a lot with support and advice from NHS Dumfries and Galloway , Dumfries and Galloway Council, Glasgow Women’s Library – and plenty of tea, coffee and cake from the Readinglasses cafe! – The group researched and launched their own women’s history walk on International Women’s Day in March 2009 and since then the walk has gone from strength to strength. There is now a self-guided walk leaflet available at local outlets and now downloadable from GWL’s website and also a guided tour supported by the group’s volunteers which runs regularly at community events and festivals – the tour’s last outing at the Wigtown Book Festival attracted 40 participants.

We are now proud to feature the latest exciting development – a podcast of the walk, available to download for free. The group were keen to make the walk as accessible to as many people as possible, so decided a podcast would be the next step. The podcast was written and recorded by the walk group and other local community members with the help of funding awarded from the Galloway Association.

Kriss Nichol from Wigtown women’s walk group has written a blog post about the experience.

It’s coming to that time of year when you might be considering shopping online more than usual. If nothing else, so you can avoid the crowded shops and umpteenth hearing of “Sleigh Ride” and “White Christmas”!

So did you know that you can raise money for Glasgow Women’s Library when you shop online without spending a penny extra?

GWL have signed up with the Easy Fundraising website. This acts as a portal to over 2000 well known internet sites such as Amazon, Ebay, Boots, HMV, Currys, Argos and many, many more. You still buy direct from there retailers but if you go into their sites via Easyfundraising they donate money to GWL and you pay no more than you would if you went direct! Many of the retailers also offer special discounts through the Easy Fundraising website so you could end up saving money!

It takes just a few minutes to go to the Easy Fundraising website and register, choosing Glasgow Women’s Library as your charity. Then every time you shop online GWL could benefit at no extra cost to you!

The only thing you have to do for GWL to receive a donation from the 2000 + participating companies is:

Sign up to an account at http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/, selecting Glasgow Women’s Library as your prefered charity on the sign up form

Use their links to company websites (see the categories section on the left hand side or the popular links section on the right-hand side)

Carry on buying as you normally would – you need do nothing more!

Examples of money we could receive include:

Amazon – 2.5% of what you spend (so for every £10 you spend GWL gets 25 pence and you pay nothing extra)

Boots – up to 5%

Waterstone’s – up to 2%

HMV – up to 2%

…and many, many more. It may not sound like a huge amount but every penny really does count!

Even better – if you are thinking of changing your energy supplier, broadband supplier or your car, house, travel, even pet insurance, GWL could receive quite substantial amounts of money ranging from £5 to £50 pounds! Have a look and see whether your preferred provider will give GWL a donation when you switch – the chances are they will.

Please take the time to sign up if you can and remember to log in to your favourite shopping sites via http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/ each time you shop. You really could make a difference!

And please don’t worry if you are not in the position to help us through online shopping. If you make http://gwl.easysearch.org.uk/ your search engine (instead of Google or similar search sites) then you can still raise money for us just by doing a few searches every day!

Told in their own words, the women reveal a fascinating story of hope, isolation, warm welcomes, cold weather, racism and the quest for acceptance and integration. Many of these women have made significant contributions to the Pollokshields community, witnessing major changes along the way.

Featuring a wealth of photographs, the book explores the migrant women’s early lives before coming to Scotland, and charts their feelings and impressions on arrival, and their experiences of education, work and community. It also provides an intimate insight into family, intergenerational differences, and, on a more light-hearted note, of food, fashion, relaxation and celebration.

The story of Pollokshields’ migrant women is one of hope and despair, challenge and success. It is the story of the women who have created and raised a whole generation of ‘new’ Scots. It is therefore part of the ever-intriguing story of Scotland.

Hi, my name is Eleftheria, but most people here call me Ellie. (I hope my mum will never read that – she hates it when people change my name!) I come from Thessaloniki in Greece and I’ve lived in Glasgow for three and a half years now.

I have a degree in Information and Library studies which I got in Greece. Then I went to a couple of other European countries and tried to do other things that didn’t really work out and now I’m here! I hope this will work, I am getting old and I really do like it here!

After coming here I took a post graduate course in Information and Library studies. A friend suggested that it would be good to freshen up my skills increase my employability and boost my confidence, I agreed it was a good advice and I enjoyed my course, the only problem was that two years letter I still didn’t have a library job, according to my interview feedbacks because of my lack of experience in library work.

So I decided to volunteer in one and gain some experience and some confidence and try to convince at least my self that I can really do this even after all this time. So after an email asking for a cataloguing position as a volunteer and an application for a post as finance assistant volunteer, since that was the only volunteering post available at the time (I needed to get near a library fast I was starting to forget everything my postgraduate degree had reminded me again) I started volunteering as a receptionist two days a week!

And it was great! The atmosphere in the library, the people who work, visit, volunteer in it, everything was great, and I was thrilled, for two days a week I had my dream job even if it was a volunteering one, I can do other things to pay my rent as I’d done all these years, at least now I also have something I actually enjoy doing! And the months go by and I don’t even notice that it’s been 6 months already and then one morning a part-time job came up at the library, and I start to thing about it and try to figure out how could I fit two jobs and my volunteering in one week, or if it would be to much I had some serious thinking to do, but then I realised I was being a bit daft, I don’t have to keep volunteering in the library, yes I do enjoy it very much but if I could work in it I’d probably enjoyed it as much if not more.

So I applied for it and I got it! And now I’m in my third week as the part time National Lifelong Learning administrative assistant which I really do enjoy as much, and though I do feel a little lost most of the time for now, with Morag’s guidance and help, and the support that I get from everyone it the library I’m sure I’ll be just fine!

Wish me luck!
