Glasgow Women’s Library named Venue of the Year

Glasgow Women’s Library was this week awarded Venue of the Year at The Icon Awards. The Awards, founded in 2015, highlight some of Scotland’s worthiest individuals, organisations and companies striving for equality and diversity.

GWL Building SignVenue of the Year was a hotly contested category which saw GWL claim victory over 9 other prestigious organisations. This award comes at an important point in GWL’s history as we celebrate our 25th anniversary and 3 years in our permanent Bridgeton home.

Since its founding in 1991, Glasgow Women’s Library has been based in a number of locations including Garnethill, Trongate and, for several years prior to our last move, in temporary premises including the Mitchell Library. We moved into our Bridgeton home 3 years ago and during this time the building was refurbished to include dedicated archive and museum stores and a new learning space, including a mezzanine floor; these works transformed the building and created a beautiful new venue that can accommodate more than 100 people.

GWL hosts hundreds of events each year, from small meetings and one-to-one learning sessions to live music events and international conferences. We pride ourselves on our warm welcome and this extends to all of the events that take place within our building.

We have three main spaces available for hire in our building – the Events Space, The Lending Library, and the Community Room. All our spaces are accessible with level access from the street, lifts to our upper levels and induction loops that can be set up in each area. Our prices start from £30 per hour and we can offer tours of the library and an introduction to the organisation as part of your hire. We also offer lunch catering and teas, coffees and biscuits at extremely competitive rates. The money we make from our venue hires goes back into the organisation and keeps GWL running and developing.
