Books for girls and young women on the theme of magic and myths

magic

For young girls growing up in our society, it is important they know how valued they are in the world and read books where females are strong, central characters to the stories. It is also important that there are seen to be female authors on the shelves to inspire young girls to read them or to take up writing or illustrating themselves.

This week we’re looking at the theme of Adventure, suggesting some books from our collection and seeking donations which we can add to the lending library.

The books chosen to promote this theme and that are available in the library are:

  • The Magic Word by Lari Don (ages 3-6)
  • Winnie’s Magic Wand by Valerie Thomas (ages 3-7)
  • The Magic Factory: Cold Spell by Theresa Breslin (ages 5-8)
  • The Heart of Glass by Vivian French (ages 9-12)
  • Pure Dead Magic by Debi Glior (ages 10-12)
  • The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende (teenage fiction)
  • The Iron Trial by Cassandra Clare (teenage fiction)
  • The Illusionists by Rosie Thomas (teenage fiction)

  • Borrequita and the Coyote by Verna Aardema (ages 3-6)
  • Yeh-Shen: A Cinderella Story from China by Ai-Ling Louie (ages 6-9)
  • Children of the Dragon: Selected Tales from Vietnam by Sherry Garland (ages 6-9)
  • Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin (ages 9-12)
  • Treasure by Megan Derr (young adult)
  • A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin (young adult)

If you’d like to donate any of these books, we’d be absolutely delighted!

Any other books centred around strong female characters and books written by women would be very welcome in our collection.  Please get in touch if you have any suggestions.
