Books for girls and young women on the theme of Family

For young girls growing up in our society, it is important they know how valued they are in the world and read books where females are strong, central characters to the stories. It is also important that there are seen to be female authors on the shelves to inspire young girls to read them or to take up writing or illustrating themselves.

This week we’re looking at the theme of Family, suggesting some books from our collection and seeking donations which we can add to the lending library.

The books chosen to promote this theme and that are available in the library are:

  • Mog’s Christmas Calamity by Judith Kerr (ages 2-11)
  • Katie Morag by Mairi Hedderwick (ages 3-8)
  • The borrowers by Mary Norton (ages 7-10)
  • Double act by Jaqueline Wilson (ages 9-12)
  • The railway children by Edith Nesbit (ages 9-12)
  • Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yeh Mah (ages 9-12)
  • The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank (teenage/young adult)

I think that White Oleander by Janet Fitch would be a brilliant addition to this collection. It’s a poignant story of mother and daughter, very inspirational.
