Edie and Thea: A Very Long Engagement

Hello, my name is Laura S and I am one of the volunteers at the Glasgow Women’s Library.

On Thursday 21st October, the Library presented a screening of Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement. The film following a lesbian couple, Edie and Thea, through their 42 year relationship and the high and lows they faced. It explores their childhood and family relationships and the issues of being gay in America from the 1950s onwards. Both women were heavily involved in the civil rights movement.

Their relationship is displayed via a rich display of photographs from their past with voice overs from both women. Edie’s sweet and warm nature gels with Thea’s ‘matter of factness’ attitude towards life. Many couples will be jealous of their love and devotion to each over the years.

As the closing credits rolled, there was barely a dry eye in the house. It was wonderful to see so many women at the screening, of all ages and backgrounds, that were equally moved by the film.
