The Lamplighter

Nuala recommends:
The Lamplighter by Jackie Kay (Bloodaxe, 2008)

This dramatic poem was broadcast as a play on BBC Radio3. It’s a joy to listen to or read, demosntrating the melodic qualities of everyday language. Kay creates a rich corus of voices. Her characters’ stories challenge the audience to consider Britian’s role in supporting the slave trade. The play shows how expensive luxuries such as sugar were in times of human life. A stunningly rich text with strong contemporary overtones.

(The Lamplighter was launched by Jackie at the Library in September 2008)
