Nights At The Circus

Nuala recommends:
Nights At The Circus by Angela Carter

One of my favourite novels. The story of Fevvers, a winged aerialiste, at the turn of the nineteenth century. Widely regarded as a metaphor for the emergence of the New Woman, this is among the most joyful of Carter’s works. Stuffed with literary parody it’s great fun from start to finish.

As a disabled woman it was a great discovery for me. Aspects of my experience were right there on the page. I felt as if the author was talking directly to me – it was wonderful. Nights At The Circus is a hugely enjoyable book that shows us how in spite of societal expections it’s possible to be in charge of your own life. Brilliant.
