caprese appraisal

Dear blog readers, Why should I keep Laine’s luminous morsels to myself, it is, after all the season of goodwill? Scene 1: Sue and Wendy briefing Laine on her shopping task for our festive potluck… Ok Laine its a cheese, in a sort of watery bag, it feels nice when you squeeze it, well that [...]

Drawing breath

Hello dear blog readers (I am sure there is a specific word for this…surely not bleaders. Every blog entry seems to flag up a further training need in me). Thanks for your enduring patience as time has rolled by, or rather sped at a gallop in Libraryland.

fresh vistas

I am writing late in the day at our new home. Since my last blog a whole load of sweat and strategy, tea and solidarity has wrought a whole new Library. Our first footers have mentioned that we have brought the homeliness and welcomingness of the old GWL with us but this is a big [...]

“Ain’t no stopping us now – we’re on the move”

Trying to get this McFadden & Whitehead disco classic adopted as the GWL theme tune but no luck so far! Anyway “final move” day has dawned (a day late right enough but that’s another story). It’s been a long time coming. Things I’ll miss about 109 Trongate? The wood burning stove (but not the tons [...]

Things That Adele Forgot…

A gen-u-ine cow bell from Switzerland. A urine sample bottle (thankfully empty!). Several tupperware lids and boxes, none of which belong together. Someone’s toothbrush and pair of pants in a polly bag. A set of darts and a dart board. A pair of Elvis sun glasses with side burns attached. You couldn’t make it up!

Echo and the Removal Men

Nearly there. Nearly there. Nearly there. Our daily chant for the last month. We are now really really nearly there. Bit of a panic yesterday though on calling the removal men to confirm our final flit today – they have no such booking. Mmm system problem perhaps. Upshot – they are coming on Saturday. Hurrah. [...]

412 from 109

Hello, Even my blogs have an echo now at 109. 412 boxes have been dispached and there is one final uplift scheduled for Friday. Next Monday the Library will start its new life at 81 Parnie Street. Checked the space today with our new placement Tania and all looked good. Thankfully, the inexplicably huge block [...]

The History Girls

The Library’s growth is both strategic and yet still reassuringly organic. Intuition, tapping into (and on spectacular occasions appearing to anticipate and influence) the zeitgeist, working with the knowledge that grafting away at a particular coalface for years gives combined with bouts of sheer, glorious luck and happenstance all figure in the planning and development [...]

Walls have ears…

‘…that’s why we don’t eat their pies’ was the rather lame ‘joke’ on the shop floor when one of my big brothers worked at Walls sausage and pie factory many years ago. Well, the walls at 109 now really do have ears – lots of them growing at an alarming rate. To explain, any level [...]
